$21K From New Startup Company

Zinch

Startup Company wants to give you Money!

Zinch.com, an interesting company focused on empowering the student in the financial aid process, actually gives out their own scholarships.

Right now there are 2 scholarship awards with deadlines for August 15 th, 2007:

  • The Zinch.com Sweet-diggity-dawg Scholarship – $20,000
  • The Zinch.com “Student Government” Scholarship – $1,000

You must create a profile for their service before entering the scholarship contest, which is fair. They really do have a nice design interface, if you can get past the hip-hop terminology such as “bling-bling” and “holla at it”. Even though 99% of youngsters know what that means, I doubt it’s as good as their totally awesome slogan: “I am more than a test score.”

Sitting Down for an Interview

An interesting fact is that the selection process involved a 40-minute group interview. If you find yourself in a situation where you have to be personally interviewed, you will want to brush up on your interviewing skills. Search for books from Amazon or at your local library dealing with job interview tips. Much of the same information will be applicable to a scholarship interview.

Private Funds Being Raised for Illegal Residents in Arizona

Winner

A Touchy Issue Touches Young Students’ Lives

In Arizona , current illegal residents do not qualify for in-state tuition at state colleges. The difference between the in and out-of-state tuition fees can make or break the higher education of many bright young students.

Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and philanthropist Paul Lindsey are the creators of this new scholarship fund. Lindsey makes a good point about the economics of the in/out-of-state tuition:

These are exactly the wrong people that we want to punish. These are the students who have graduated from local high schools; maybe they’ve been in the states almost their whole lives. Maybe they’re good students, and they want to continue with their education. Those are the people that we need here and we want here.

Read the Arizona Daily Star article for more detail on the first recipient (pictured). Also note that the proposed Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act could make these private donations unnecessary.

If you are Hispanic and living in the country illegally, look for these types of initiatives in your local immigrant-advocacy groups.

Forget About Writing an Essay

Video

…Make a Video!

Bridgestone Tires is tossing aside the old fashioned scholarship essay and wants students to make a short video on the subject of safe driving.

A panel will decide on 10 finalists, and then the public will vote for their favorite finalist video. Many students will find this to be a refreshing method of applying for a scholarship. Some are handy with the pen, and others are creative at making videos. Making videos, even with professional quality editing, can be accomplished with software like Apple’s Final Cut Studio. Not all can afford this, so you may be able to get away with a ‘Lonelygirl15’ web cam job if you spice it up with originality.

Hurry up and get your submission in before July 27th.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • 16-21 Years Old
  • Legal Resident of the U.S.
  • Valid Drivers License
  • Currently Enrolled Full-Time in Accredited Secondary, College Level, or Trade School

3 Grand Prize Winners will each receive $5000.

All 10 finalists will receive…a new set of Bridgestone Tires. Seriously.

Submit your video at SafetyScholars.com

50 Million in Private Funding from One Man in Denver!

Tim Marquez

Social Security Number a Requirement However

This is one rich guy, oilman Tim Marquez, who put up $50,000,000 of his own money to help 500 Denver Public School students attend college.

The problem is that many very deserving, but illegal, citizens will not be eligible for the scholarships.

Marquez and his lawyers are basing their decision on a federal law that prohibits harboring illegal immigrants. They also said state laws could prohibit giving the money but couldn’t cite any.

Anyone in their right mind can agree that sending a kid to college should not be considered “harboring illegal immigrants”. But the law is the law, and if the man gives away millions of dollars, it’s in his best interest to remain squeaky clean.

This issue will only gain momentum. See another post we have on a private fund that DOES give out money to illegal immigrants.
